Another magazine bites the print dust: 'US News & World Report'

US News & World Report

US News & World Report magazine will cease printing its monthly magazine in 2011, an internal memo from editor Brian Kelly posted to journalism website Romenesko has revealed.

Kelly said in the memo on Friday that the publication would cease printing the regular monthly magazine for subscribers. Instead, it would publish only a series of single-topic issues that will be available on newsstands and for “targeted distribution.” The December issue would be its last print edition.

US News & World Report was known for its rankings of the best colleges, hospitals, personal finance. The listings will continue to be published in print format, along with four special topic issues such as history and religion, but the rest of the publication's content will only be available online, the memo said.

Based in Washington and owned by New York Daily News publisher Mort Zuckerman, US News & World Report has seen plummeting circulation figures forcing it from being a weekly, on to a fortnightly, and finally as a monthly.

The memo said: “All of us at US News Media Group have been aggressively responding to the changing habits in the media marketplace, and these latest moves will accelerate our ability to grow our online businesses and position ourselves to take advantage of the emerging platforms for distributing information such as the iPad and Android tablets. We'll discuss this in more detail in meetings starting next week.”
