SUBSCRIBERS: What is The Reviewer?
The Reviewer is a free electronic book-reviews magazine - it is an e-zine. This Web version is only meant to supplement the e-version. Why is The Reviewer an e-zine, and not a web-zine?
An e-zine has its advantages. Firstly, an e-mail address is something that is basic . Without one, no one can be on the Net. But then, even those who are not Netizens too can have one. If one has an e-mail address one can receive an e- zine -as straight as that. Moreover, an e-zine is sent out as an e-mail, as plain text. This means the content is light. One gets the information/content immediately. If that is not all, since the e-zine is sent out as ASCII text one does not have to unnecessarily worry about browsers and operating systems. An e-zine has another plus point over a web-zine - one does not have to wait for people to visit or, more often than not, remember to visit the website. The content is directly accessible to the subscriber/reader. On top of it, subscribers receive the e-zine via mail since they have asked for it. They read it because they are interested or at least curious about what the e-zine carries. We are not bothered about casual visitors who would just happen to bump across a site. We know our subscribers are committed readers. Visitors, on the other hand, are not necessarily readers in the first place. To repeat, this Web version is only meant to supplement the e-version. The Reviewer is and will remain an e-zine. What is the frequency of The Reviewer?
The Reviewer is issued every Sunday. How does one subscribe?
It is easy - send a blank e-mail to thereviewer-subscribe@onelist.com How do one unsubscribe?
It is as easy - send a blank e-mail to thereviewer-unsubscribe@onelist.com AUTHORS AND PUBLISHERS: What kind of books does The Reviewer review?
We are a serious lot. We consciously stay away from the following: (i) outright technical and text books; and (ii) third-rate pulp fiction. The rest is ok. But then, query first. We do not review books online. How does one get a book reviewed?
Irrespective of whether one is the author or the publisher, all one has to do before shipping it across is to query. Sending a book would not guarantee a review. Once it is cleared by the editor, one can mail it to The Reviewer. Please do not ask when the book will be reviewed. We will contact the publisher/author and let them know in advance. We do not review books based on press releases issued by the author/publisher. Those are fine as announcements, that is all. Please do send an e-mail letting us know that a package is on its way. Send books to: Subir Ghosh; Editor, The Reviewer; 117 C Dhawalgiri Apartments, Sector 11; Noida; Uttar Pradesh 201 301; INDIA. Does The Reviewer review e-pubs?
Of course. But we do not accept e-books by e-mail. A CD will have to be sent. Does The Reviewer review audio books?
Why not? ADVERTISERS: How should one go about it?
We only accept advertisements which would be of interest to our subscribers/readers. Ideally, they should pertain to the world of books or writing. Our rate for a text-only ad (word limit: 50 words) is $15 (Rs 500) for 3 consecutive issues. If one wants to insert an advertisement, send the ad copy with a cheque drawn in the name of "Subir Ghosh" to 117 C Dhawalgiri Apartments, Sector 11; Noida; Uttar Pradesh 201 301; INDIA. We have not started accepting paid advertisements for the Web version yet. Why should one advertise in The Reviewer?
Our e-zine is read by our subscribers. Our e-zine offers our subscribers/readers good content. Our e-zines are eagerly awaited and usually read completely. Do value our readers - they are serious people on the lookout for serious books. Does The Reviewer trade/exchange advertisements?
We do - but on a one-to-one basis. CONTRIBUTORS: There are just two things: GUIDELINES: All reviews must include the following: title; author; publisher; no. of pages; price. The word count for the "Pick of the Week" section would be 1200-1500 words, and that for "Other Pickings" 500-750 words. The time lag between the publication of the review in The Reviewer and that of the book itself must not be more than a year. A month is always desirable.:) Deadline for Sunday's issue would be the preceding Thursday. Do query first, lest two or more of our panelists end up reviewing at cross-purposes. TERMS AND CONDITIONS: By default, the copyright will rest with the reviewer concerned. Exceptions: (i) when a publisher/author has sent the book to the panelist on specific request from The Reviewer . (ii) when the panelist herself/himself wishes to pass on the copyright to us. The Reviewer will only have the one-time, one-week exclusive right to use the review in a particular issue and archive it on the site thereafter. Once our syndication service starts, any revenue generated from a review will be shared 55:45 between the panelist concerned and The Reviewer. Last updated May 22, 2000. |
